Discuss This FormatCTO-as-a-service format for startups and mid-size companies — regular technology mentorship for the founder without need to hire a permanent CTO.
When This Format Fits
CTO-as-a-service format suits when the company is at 5-50 people stage, technology is important but the company has not yet grown to a level justifying internal CTO ($150K+ per year total cost); the founder lacks sufficient technology expertise for independent decisions; there are specific technology challenges (product launch, scaling, stack choice); expertise is wanted without permanent salary load and long-term hiring obligations.
Regular sessions with the founder (every 2-4 weeks for 1-2 hours) — discussing current technology decisions, reviewing important choices, formulating architectural principles. Help in hiring key IT people — interviews, candidate evaluation. Periodic technology team and contractor review. Consultations on one-off decisions between regular sessions. Do not write code, do not manage the team operationally. My position — strategic advisor for the founder.
Founder and their technology team (if any) lead implementation of decisions. Contractors hired for specific tasks do the work. Founder remains accountable for technology decisions with my advisory support. After the company reaches scale justifying internal CTO, I help in hiring and handover.
