How It Should Work

What I Do in These Situations

I work as external CTO advisor for regional startups and mid-size companies. Format — regular sessions with the founder (every 2-4 weeks for 1-2 hours), availability for one-off questions between sessions, help in hiring key people, architectural decision and contractor proposal review. I do not write code, do not manage the team operationally. My position — strategic and architectural advisor for the founder for 12-18 months until internal CTO is justified.

Team role: The founder and their technology team (if any) lead implementation. Contractors hired for specific tasks do the work. I work with the founder as advisor on technology decisions, help in hiring key people, review important choices. After the company reaches scale justifying internal CTO, I help in hiring and handover, stay as board member or periodic advisor.
